Black Mask was a pulp magazine first published in 1920 by H L Mencken and George J Nathan. Various editors ran the magazine over the years and Philip C Cody was in charge when the content became more sensationalist. Stories were more intricately plotted and strewn with more blood, guts, gore and sex. Stories published by some big names include Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Erle Stanley Gardner and George Harmon Coxe..

The magazine ceased production in the 1950's but is regarded as one of the best of the pulp's ever to be produced.
