RAMSEY CAMPBELL, PROBABLY, originally published by PS back in 2002 (and subsequently as a DIP trade paperback in 2015) since which time the author has expanded some of the essays, added others & generally tinkered around with the running order . . . as is his wont. Thus the original 140,000-or-so words compiled from Ramseys non-fiction of three decades have been considerably (and entertainingly) expanded to represent getting on for a full half-a-century of Campbelliana now well in excess of 150,000 words.
The subjects range from the perils of authorship to the delights of amateur fiction & film, from drugs to nightmares, from the Highgate Vampire to the Dracula Societys marching song. Friends are remembered & so is Mary Whitehouse. A seminal study of schoolgirl spanking is brought up to date. Many thoughts on the history of horror fiction are included. And, at last, it is revealed why Harlan Ellison® is responsible.

RAMSEY CAMPBELL, CERTAINLY collects the crop of the authors columns & essays from the last twenty years. Censorship is confronted, whether in Charles Platts notorious novel or a disciplinary memoir. Standards of horror are upheld, & the UNCANNY is acclaimed. Fun is had with uproarious films, & the mating of comedy & horror is celebrated. A novel favoured by discussion groups is skewered, & a supposed satire of horror is satirised. M. R. James is defended against accusations of plagiarism, & the importance of his style is demonstrated. Lovecrafts prose is appreciated at length, as are several of his greatest tales. Other builders of the great tradition are discussed Machen, Blackwood, Hodgson & inspired toilers in the pulps are given their considerable due Leiber, Wellman, St Clair. Nor are living talents left out: youll find Niveau, Lansdale, Atkins, Bestwick & many another. Horror comics are examined & enjoyed, & so is the macabre in music.
